The Last Litter Program
Helping end the cycle of unwanted puppies, one litter at a time.
At Shepparton Animal Rescue and Rehoming (SARR), we believe that preventing unwanted litters is just as important as rescuing animals already in need.
Our Last Litter Program aims to help cat owners break the cycle of unplanned breeding while ensuring their puppies have the opportunity to find safe, loving homes.
What is the Last Litter Program?
The Last Litter Program is designed for owners whose undesexed female dog has had a litter of puppies.
Through this program, SARR aims to assist by:
- Taking the puppies into our rescue program when they are old enough to be safely separated from their mother.
- Providing the puppies with appropriate veterinary care, vaccinations, microchipping and desexing before adoption.
- Finding each puppy a suitable, loving forever home.
- Helping arrange desexing for the mother cat to prevent future unwanted litters.
Why is this program important?
Every year, rescue organisations and pounds are overwhelmed by unwanted dogs and puppies.
A single undesexed female dog can produce multiple litters each year, contributing to an ongoing cycle of overpopulation.
By helping owners desex their mother dogs and responsibly rehoming their final litter, we can reduce the number of puppies entering shelters and rescue organisations in the future.
Prevention is one of the most powerful forms of rescue.
Who can apply?
Our Last Litter Program is intended for cat owners who:
- Have a female dog who has recently given birth or is currently raising puppies.
- Are willing to have their mother dog desexed.
- Want assistance finding responsible homes for the puppies.
- Are committed to preventing future unplanned litters.
Participation is subject to available foster carers, funding and rescue capacity.
How does it work?
Step 1: Submit an application Contact SARR with information about your mother dog, the number of puppies and their ages.
Step 2: Application review Our team will assess your circumstances and determine whether we have the resources and foster care availability to assist.
Step 3: Desexing arrangements We will discuss arrangements for having the mother dog desexed so this truly becomes her last litter.
Step 4: Puppy care and adoption
Once the puppies are developmentally ready to leave their mother, they can enter SARR's care, receive their required veterinary treatment and begin their journey towards adoption.
Together, we can make a difference.
Our goal isn't to judge owners or their circumstances. It's to provide practical solutions that prevent more unwanted puppies from entering an already overwhelmed rescue system.
One desexed mother dog means countless future puppies who won't need rescuing.
